Into the Danakil: 3 Days of Fire & Salt

What Awaits You on This 3-Day Expedition

In northeastern Ethiopia, the Earth is splitting apart. Tectonic plates tear away from each other, creating a landscape so surreal that NASA studies it to understand Mars.

This is the hottest place on Earth. Temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. It's one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet. And yet, humanity's oldest ancestors walked here. The Afar people have thrived here for millennia. And you can witness it all in just three days.

  • Morning | Arrival in Semera

Land at Semera Airport. Meet your expedition team—local Afar guides whose families have navigated this land for generations. Board 4x4s and descend into the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on Earth.

Morning Drive | Across the Plains

Roads turn to gravel, then sand. The landscape flattens. Your guide shares stories of the Afar people—pastoralists and salt miners who have thrived here for centuries.

Lunch & Swim | Lake Afdera

Arrive at Lake Afdera, nearly 100 metres below sea level. Enjoy a hot lunch. Then swim in hyper-saline waters—so dense you float effortlessly. A surreal experience.

    Afternoon | Drive to Hamedela

Continue to Hamedela, base camp for exploring the northern Danakil. The rough road reminds you this is an expedition.

Sunset | Lake Asale – Salt Flats & Camel Caravans

Witness the salt flats of Lake Asale (Karum) —a vast white expanse. Watch Afar salt caravans, a tradition unchanged for centuries. Camels carry salt blocks across the dazzling white crust as the sun transforms the flats to gold, then pink.

    Evening | Camping at Hamedela

Return to camp. Dinner served. Sleep in traditional huts or under a canopy of stars.

    Overnight: Camping at Hamedela

  • Early Morning | Dallol – Earth's Most Surreal Landscape

Drive to the Dallol hydrothermal fields—116 metres below sea level. Sulfur yellows, iron reds, copper greens create a kaleidoscope of colour. Walk past bubbling acid pools, geysers, and alien-like mineral formations. It feels like another planet. Visit salt mountains and the sulfur lake.

Late Morning | Return to Hamedela

Lunch and rest. Heat exceeds 45°C (113°F).

Afternoon | Drive to Erta Ale Base Camp

Drive 4–6 hours across lava desert to Dodom base camp. Rest and eat.

Evening/Night | Trek to Erta Ale Crater Rim

Night trek: 3 hours, 15–17 km over volcanic terrain. Camels carry gear.

At the rim, witness a boiling lava lake—60–100 metres wide. Glowing, heaving, sending fountains of fire. Heat radiates. Ground vibrates.

Late Night | Camping on the Volcano Rim

Sleep on the rim. Lava glow from your sleeping bag. Unforgettable.

  • Early Morning | Sunrise at Erta Ale

Optional sunrise visit to the crater rim. Watch the lava lake in soft morning light—different colours, equally breathtaking.

    Morning | Descent & Breakfast

Descend 30–40 minutes to Dodom base camp. Hot breakfast awaits. Load 4x4s and begin the return journey.

    Afternoon | Return to Semera

Drive back across the lava desert. Stop at Afdera for lunch. Final swim in the hyper-saline lake—one last moment of weightlessness.

    Late Afternoon | Departure

Arrive at Semera Airport. Evening flight back to Addis Ababa.

Look down on the Danakil from above. You have stood at the edge of creation.
