Home to at least 43 mammal species, including seven endemics, and over 221 bird species, with nine marked as threatened, Abune Yosef is a haven of biodiversity.
The iconic Ethiopian wolf, revered as the rarest and most endangered canid globally, roams these lands alongside herds of gelada baboons, the sole grass-eating baboons worldwide. Leopards, grivet monkeys, and a myriad of other creatures share this habitat, painting a vivid portrait of wilderness.
Yet, Abune Yosef's significance extends beyond its terrestrial inhabitants. It boasts the second-highest bird diversity and endemism levels in Africa, sheltering nine threatened bird species, including the majestic bearded vulture.
